Article directories are the most frequently used distribution point for our content.  A good article directory offers us three major advantages.  The first of those is that a top ranking article directory gets a lot of visitors.  That means a lot of people have an opportunity to find our article there.  Some of those people will read our article, and, if we have written persuasively, some of those readers will click through to our site.

Secondly, many webmasters who monetize their sites with advertising will add our articles (including our links) to add to their own sites in our niche or a related niche.  While these niche specific sites will have less traffic than the directory, that traffic will be more targeted, so our article will be relevant to those visitors’ interests.  Consequently, we can expect a higher proportion of those niche website’s visitors to choose to read our article.

Recall that the readers of our syndicated article want to gather information.  If we want to entice them to click a link to actually come to our site, we must promise even more information that is pertient to them.  Of course, we always follow through with our promises or we shall immediately lose credibility.  Thus, our article marketing content must be interesting, accurate and informative, but it must leave the impression that we still have more to tell them.  Hence we link to a content page.

At the same time, within the syndicated article, we let our readers know that once they have gathered all the information they need to make a buying decision, they will find the product or service that will solve their problems right there on our site.  By including that information, we have an opportunity to link to one of our selling pages largely for the purpose of search engine optimization.

It is easiest to achieve the task of incorporating these two types of links within articles that we syndicate directly to other sites within our niche, because we can place those links contextually.  However, if we limit our article distribution to article directories, we can still accomplish our task by cleverly using a well written resource box to provide the rationale for linking to both kinds of pages.

On of first type of linked page, we will move our prospects along the decision continuum.  Remember that the visitors have already been persuaded to accept our initial offer by clicking on our link, so they are in an agreeable frame of mind.  They are no long “just readers,” they have become serious prospects.  We shall offer them a link to the page where they can actually buy, but we focus primarily on getting them to take one more small step by asking for the contact information in exchange for the promise of even more valuable content. 

In our syndicated article we use our content to sell our expertise.  On the linked page, we’re selling our credibility and integrity.  Once we have their contact information we can begin selling our product, subtly at first and then with increasing urgency.

Remember that the other type of link takes the clicker (or the search engine robot) to our page where we directly sell our product or service.  Since the purpose of that link is primarily search engine optimization, it is especially important that our anchor (linking) text is at once an accurate description of the selling page and a useful long tail keyword with implicit commercial intent.

As marketers, all of our efforts are toward making the sale.  As writers we must make the sale without disturbing the flow of our content.  First we sell the article readers on their need for more information and convince them that they can find that information by clicking our link.  Then, with the second link type, we need to convince the search engine spiders that we have provided anchor text that is an accurate name for the content that we have on our selling page to which that link leads.  Thus our anchor text and the landing page content must be very similar.

If we handle of syndication to article directories properly, we will provide unique articles to each directory to which we submit.  If we spin our content, then we can accomplish producing multiple unique versions of the same content.  But even if we submit a unique article to each directory, those niche sites that get our articles from the same directory will be duplicate content.  Thus, while spinning our article prior to submission to multiple directories is a great improvement, we can still do even better in squeezing value from our article marketing efforts.

An alternative to using only article directories is to also distributed unique articles to individual sites within our marketing niche.  Unfortunately this can be a time consuming challenge in identifying potential publishers for our articles and then convincing those webmasters that they can actually benefit from publication of our articles (and our contextual links).

Happily there is a semi-automated system to make implementation of this writer to publisher exchange easier.  This alternative is a content distribution consortium of websites and content writers.  I provide a detailed description of this automated content distribution system in another article.

It is always easier to logically include both types of links within our articles if we syndicate directly to websites that are within our general niche category; in those cases we can make our links contextual within the article, itself.  However, if we limit our article distribution to article directories, we can still accomplish our task by cleverly using a well written resource box to provide the rationale for linking to both kinds of pages.

Unfortunately those two ways of achieving our single objective are not always complimentary to each other.  The pages on our site to which we might want to send the article readers may not be our most desired pages for maximizing our search optimization resources.  Let me explain this problem in a little more detail.

Often we pay the most SEO attention to pages that generate revenue directly.  We are optimizing, in those cases, for searchers who are in a buying state of mind. 

Our distributed article readers are not yet in they buying frame; instead they are often in the very early phases of information gathering.  That’s why they came to our article rather than going directly to a store or service provider.

Let’s balance those two visitor mental frames against the way we typically sculpt a page on a business site.  One fundamental rule of marketing that applies to a good website design for a business is that each page within our site should be constructed in a way that contributes to creating only one action on the part of the prospect.  That action might be buying or it might be signing up for our mailing list in order to receive additional information (that we may hope, in turn, to use to move them closer to deciding upon our product or service).  So, if we absolutely obey the marketing rule, it is logically impossible to both optimize our most important pages and satisfy the reader of our article–can we?

That is the seemingly unwinnable choice that faces us.  Should we direct our article marketing strategy on SEO or on providing a landing page for our readers that will offer them what they truly desire at their current stage of decision making (or procrastination, in some cases)?  Should we incorporate two objectives within a single page on our site, or ought we make a choice to abide by common sense marketing principles?

As we develop our overall article syndication strategy and the tactics of writing a single article, we must be attentive to these competing options.

Internet marketing is simply writing short and general articles about the products and services you offer and submitting these articles to different article directories across the web. Your article will then be redistributed to scores of sites that are dying for free content that is related to what you have to offer. Your best bet to success is to ALWAYS put a link to your site at the end of your article so that viewers who show interest in your article may click on your link and land on your site. When we use article spinning, it is so that we can obtain more rewards from the time or financial resources that we have invested into creating an excellent piece of web content.  We want avoid having the very same article’s publication on too many websites, because content that is too similar will not be of any value to anyone involved.  The readers do not want to repeatedly find the same article, the websites face the possibility of getting no benefit at all from a duplicate article since the search engines try not to list the same article multiple times in any search results and we, as online marketers, in turn stand a substantially decreased liklihood of getting all of the traffic or the search engine optimization benefit that we could have otherwise received. 

Spinning is simply rewriting the article, one bit of content at a time, and then using software to randomly select from the alternatives that we have written for each section to construct a large number of unique articles from our original version combined with our alternatives.  We can offer alternatives for entire paragraphs, for entire sentences, for phrases of a few words and for individual words.  We can even code our spinning in such a way so that some versions of the resulting articles may have six paragraphs while other have eight, for example. 

A technique that most good spinning software options permit is called nested spinning.  That is simply placing alternatives within other alternatives.  As an example of this, let’s say that my original sentence is, “I adore my new green hat.”  I could rewrite two substitutions for that.  The first might be, “I surely love my green hat that I bought recently.”  A second alternative could be broken into two sentences to achieve even more variety.  “I purchased a new hat not long ago.  It’s a very cheery bright green.”  When these are presented to my spinning software, it will randomly choose one of the three alternatives for each of the many article versions that it provides.

I can provide more alternatives by using nested spinning for each of those options that I have so far created.  I’ll just use the third alternative for a quick example of how this works.  I could provide a rewritten version of the words, “purchased a new hat” to “bought a new cap.”  I could also provide an alternative to “not long ago.”  That might become, “a short while ago.”  In other words options are nested inside other options.

The more choices the spinning software has, the more versions of the same base article that are sufficiently unique (different from every other version) will be successfully generated.  (A good target is to have each version that you submit to a website be a minimum of 25% different from every other version.  I actually prefer to reach a higher standard of about 35% or more.)

Here are the two best ways to maximize your spinning efforts.

Method 1:  Rewrite every paragraph one time (two would be even better).  Use nested spinning by now rewriting each sentence in each alternative of each paragraph once.  Next, add one more level of nesting by providing alternatives to certain words and phrases in the first two paragraphs and in the last paragraph.

Method 2:  Rewrite every sentence in the entire article one time.  Go back to the beginning of the article.  Provide one more rewritten version of each sentence in the first, second and last paragraphs.  Apply the first level nesting to selected individual words and phrases in the first three and the final paragraph.  Also provide some alternatives for selected words and phrases in those middle paragraphs.

The first approach is more thorough and will yield somewhat better results.  The second approach is faster and will usually yield satisfactory results.

Make sure you get some software that helps to spin the article content and links.  Basically spinning allows you to subsitute words and sentences for one another so that you can get a different article from the same basic article.  DO NOT try to use rewriting software – I have seen none that do a decent job – usually it reads like garbage and that will not help your rankings.  If you spin an article right, you can easilly get 10-20 different reading articles from a single article, enough to not worry about duplicate content out there (and possible penalties). 
5. The next step is to mass distribute your articles to sites looking for great content.  You can do this manually for free, or find some tools to purchase that can greatly speed this up.  I usually choose to pay some money in the savings of time.  There are so many things to do, you have to trade off somewhere.  You want to make sure you spread out the distribution – its unnatural for any site to go from no links to 500 links in 1 day – what is more natural is 0 to 10 to 18 to 25 to 40 … over many weeks build the level up.
6. A good first rule is to only write about topics you are very familiar with.  Its just easier.Most sites are created initially around a topic the person considers themselves an expert on.This makes it far easier, as you are writing about what you know a lot about.  Of course you can easily do research too – just go to an article directory, pick your niche topic and start reading.It is really amazing how fast you can pick up basic information, and use that to create an article.Also, make sure you write in a less formal manner that is easily understood.  There is no point in using fancy words - afterall the primary focus is the backlinks in the article.  This is not a doctoral thesis – you want to create an article in 15-20 minutes and move on to modifications and other stuff.

A second rule is to make sure you write your article in such a way that its easy to rewrite it some.  Why?? You used to be able to mass distribute the same thing across the net and get a bonus for the numbers - those days are gone.  Now days, the search engines are smart enough to see that they are duplicate copies – a few is ok, but having 1000′s you will actually get penalized for.  This is where rewriting comes in.  There are software tools out there that can help you - BUT do not let them do it for you.  Often the result is a bunch of garbage text that makes no sense.  The search engines are onto this too (they have semantics) and you will get penalized, plus it just makes your site linked look bad that such an idiot that cannot even write would link to you (readers would not know it was you who wrote it).  One of the best tools I have ever used for rewriting exists at My Article Network.You can easily rewrite articles up to 1000%++ (each sentence has 10 alternates + other stuff) and distribute them on up to 10,000 blogs.

A good third rule is to try to limit your use of links in the article.  Most article directories limit you anyway but outside of that you can post on blogs and elsewhere with as many links as you want.  Again, use common sense - the search engines are smarter than that.If one link is good, 70 links are not better.A good rule of thumb is to not use more than 1 link per 200 words.You always want to be consistent with your keywords used to link to get the maximum benefit in the shortest time.  Do not try to master 20 keywords at once by linking different ones each time.  You need some repetition to get any ranking boost at all.Concentrate only on a few keywords in the beginning and move your rank up on those.Once you achieve ranking on page 1 or 2 on Google, then you can move on to other words to broaden the base.

A last rule to remember is that repetition not only keeps it going, it makes it work.  You need to set up a plan to write one article every 2 days at least in the beginning for the first month or so.  Even after you get higher ranking, you still need to pump in some linked articles at least once a week to keep it fresh.  The search engines look at the date of the posts that have the link – over time they decay the value of those links if they see nothing new coming in.You will want accounts at all the major article networks such as Ezine that you can post on- search google for a list.

Done properly, article marketing can be a central hub to other stuff you do to boost your overall site ranking and visibility.

The Keyword Phrase How Important Is It to your niche marketing efforts?

The use of keywords has changed over the years and all the experts seem to have their own opinion, and the biggest question, or discussion that always comes up is : “Are key words and key word phrases really needed? Here’s’ my take on this issue: Yes! Yes! Yes! Especially in Article Marketing. The key word meta tag my be dead but the essence of what the keyword does for search engines has not changed. Even when search engines base there rankings primarily website or article content they still need to use some means of distinguishing how the scanned sites need to be characterized and graded. , Guess what , keywords play real big into the equation. Why do you think you get penalized for key word stuffing? For example if your were looking for “fishing equipment” , I am going to search on Google using these same two words. I think you get the picture because goggle is going to list sites that have this keyword phrase or similar words in their website or article content. Meta tags my hold no significance but the keyword and keyword phrase are still incredibly important tools to improve your internet marketing efforts.

Here are a few simple tips to generate a list of powerful keywords that you can use when you start writing your articles.

#1 – You need to have identified what your niche market is going to be. Niches, are a specific market derived from a much larger market. Lets take for example we are looking for specific information about article marketing services, the most broad market would be marketing , then your niche would be article marketing . This information could also be under the broad marketing of Internet marketing but your niche would still be article marketing. My keyword list would be generated from the two words “article” and “Marketing” combined together. The bottom line here, is you need familiarize yourself with your niche market. I can’t emphasize the importance of this step, because without it you are doomed to failure. You need to complete step #1 if you want to be successful.

#2 - After you have discovered your niche market you will be ready to move on and start developing your keyword or key word phrase list. First thing I want you to do is go to Google adwords and sign up for a free account. It’s free to join and their keyword generation tools are exceptional. .

These free tools are very easy to use, lets use “marketing” for our example. Enter this phrase into the box that says Enter one keyword or phrase per line: You will notice that the results are way to broad if I were selling information related to crappie fishing. Let be more specific and enter the keyword phrase “article marketing” , Now were talking! This phrase is not near as competitive and has 100’s of key word phrases you would start building a key word list for articles about article marketing. Of course this is only an example you could use this technique for any market. All I do now is down load this list to my pc and I ready to pick the keywords that I will have the best chance to get listed on the search engines with. You will now need to prioritize and weed out phrases that are too competitive or have a very low monthly search volume, so pay close attention to the two columns in the report that have the headings “Advertiser Competition” and “Approx Search Volume:” respectively.

Pay very close attention to the green bar in the advertiser competition. If that green bar is over have half way across the box, delete this key word phrase from you list. Here’s a tip I use. Concentrate on words or phrases where the green bar is no more that ¼ the way across, and search volume that is greater that 1000.

Now you are ready to start writing your articles. {I recommend you just start writing what ever comes to your mind then refine your article, it’s a bit like brain storming and works for me so I can get all my ideas on paper. It has been my experience it is better to just start writing your topic and let your expertise flow into your words before you worry about inserting your key words or keyword phrases.} You need to focus on writing 300 to 600 words in length, it seems people will read your articles more often if they are within this word count range. After you have written down your ideas its time to refine your article by inserting at least two different keyword phrases that refer directly to your articles content. Pay close attention to how many times your phrases are repeated, it is important that you space approximately 100 word counts between them. You don’t want to get penalized by the search engines for what is called keyword stuffing. Also , for example the keyword phrase article marketing automation or any variation that had the first two words the same then I could only be used them every 100 words. If your article was say 600 words in length, then you could use phrases that had the exact words “article marketing “ six times. {You can mix up your keyword phrases so each word is not exactly the same but be careful. Of course if you get creative you could vary your words so they are not exact and get even more value out of this same phrase.}

I have identified below some key steps you can use to develop your own marketing plan.

#1 Like I said in my opening paragraphs above you need to identify your “niche” market to be successful with your efforts. The more specific you can be with your article marketing plan the more success you will have. You will build your whole plan based on what you choose in this step, that is why I have Identified it as #1.

#2 Create a keyword , keyword phrase list of at least 50 keyword phrases. These words need to be associated with the “niche” market you have chosen. {I do not recommend you start out targeting single keywords, select keyword phrases about your niche that are two and three words in length. Concentrate on using keyword phrases that are two and three words in length.} To be honest with you I have never done very well with single keywords in my articles. It has been my experience that single keywords do not score high for me on the search engines. If you have a low advertising budget, like most of us, I would like to suggest an excellent free keyword phrase generator that is offered by Google adwords. This service is free and you do not need to deposit any money. Just enter a single keyword that is specific to your niche and the Adwords system will generate a keyword phrase list of two, three and more words. Concentrate on using the two and three word phrases for your article marketing efforts.

#3 Now you are ready to start writing articles! What I do in my writing is just start writing what comes to mind that is pertinent to the niche I have selected. If you have to do any research do it before you start writing. This is also an excellent way to help with your articles structure. Start out writing by inserting your two and three word phrases as you go. When you are writing your articles make sure that you do not repeat your keyword phrase but every 100 words. For example, if I were going to write an article that included “crappie fishing” in my first paragraph , then I could not repeat this phrase for 100 words. There are ways to mix your phrases up to get the same ranking without duplicating your phrases; example instead of using “article automation” you could use “automate articles” and not be penalized by the search engines for excessive keywords. Remember concentrate on the quality of your article when inserting keyword phrase. It’s important that you get the attention of the reader.

#4 Create a list of article directories to submit your article too. All article directories are not created equal so I suggest you use the following simple steps list the sites you want to submit to in a priority by Google ranking sequence. To get a listing of directories just do a search using the key word “article directory” as your search term. The results will give you 1000’nds of sites to use in your list development. I Do suggest two very important article sites that are worth mentioning that you should put at the top of your list, and they are ezinearticles.com and Searchwarp.com. Now to prioritize these sites for my list, I use a free website ranking tool that works great for this application. Just go to Google and do a search using the keyword phrase “Google website ranking tools” this should bring up a list of sites that offer this tool. You see, there is no “secret” – there is no easy, push button method to making money online. Period. The only reason your told these products are must haves, is because the “gurus” have now built most of thir income from launching products to unsuspecting buyers like you. This forum recently went paid, and I know I just got done ranting about not buying products, but this is not a rehashed internet marketing ebook, this is an actual community of experienced internet marketers willing to share everything with you, and personally help you make your first dollar online, or improve your current marketing efforts dramatically.

And yes, I could squeeze in those extra 26 articles tonight, and you wouldn’t even know the difference. But I want this to be an honest experiement. I didn’t write 300 articles, so I don’t want to make that claim, I just wanted a tough challenge. And I feel I got a good one. I learned from this one, and feel next time I try to do this (next week actually), I’ll do much better, and work more efficiently. The first, mundane article challenge was weak, with a goal of only 100 articles in 30 days. Way too easy….

NEW ARTICLE CHALLENGE DETAILS:

A whopping 300 articles in 72 hours! Yes, 100 articles A DAY for three days straight. Now THIS is a challenge.

Now, you might be thinking, no way is that possible… But I won’t be alone on this one. I have recruited a fellow article writer to help me complete this enormous task. We will each write 50 articles per day during the 3 day challenge.

The idea is to try and write 9 articles/hour for 6 hours each day, broken up into two 3 hr work flows. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone else try to calculate their articles per hour(aph), =) If I can just cruise at an average of 9 aph I’ll do fine.

This challenge will commence on this upcoming Tuesday the 10th, and continue until the 13th.

I will update this blog as things progress, as well as report exactly how much money this challenge makes us. That’s why we’re all here anyways right?!

Yesterday I got 5 articles into directory 1, as well as 1 article for the actual site. And so far today I have 7 articles, plus 1 for the blog. These articles will be submitted to directory 2.

It’s really not that difficult, you just need to get into the zone. Personally, I put on some of my favorite music, right now its the new Animal Collective album, and just hammer down. Plus, it’s actually fun using Speech Recognition for Mac OS X, and you get much more done. If I can just average 6 articles/day, I’ll shatter my goal of 100 articles in 30 days.

And what about my articles? Well, to be honest, I’m using a lot of the titles and openings in Article Insider Profits, I’ve read many article marketing ebooks, and to be honest, this is the best one in my opinion, mainly because you get a great article marketing swipe file with highly converting titles and openings. While Bryans is 500 articles by the end of Feb, I am doing a slightly shorter challenge. My goal is 100 articles in 30 days.

One of my most important tools in this process will be MacSpeech Dictate. This is speech recognition for Mac users. It uses the same engine as Dragon Naturally Speaking, but is built for Mac. It is an amazing tool, allowing you to write much, much faster. And it works seamlessly with all your favorite Mac applications.

Today I have written 6 articles so far. I plan on writing more later, and hopefully I will crush my 100 article goal by far. They say 100 articles is worth around 4k/ month, obviously this will vary person by person, but let’s see how much truth there is to this.

My plan is structered like so;

5 articles per day on various niches (2-3) driving traffic to simple review landing pages. 1 article per day for site article content. So 150 articles in article directories, and 30 articles on the site for it’s own unique content. This way your building quality content for own site, not just others. Never just submit to article directories, save some of that content for yourself!
